At our centre, assessment of the fallopian tubes forms an important part of fertility investigations.
Tubal factors contribute to infertility in approximately 15% of couples and are more common in secondary infertility, where conception is difficult after a previous pregnancy.
HSG can also be valuable after repeated unsuccessful treatment when a hydrosalpinx is suspected.
A hydrosalpinx is a fluid-filled, blocked fallopian tube. Fluid may flow back into the uterus, reduce the chance of embryo implantation, and increase miscarriage risk. If confirmed, the affected tube may be surgically removed or occluded so that it no longer communicates with the uterus.
Some studies also suggest a short-term increase in the chance of natural conception after hysterosalpingography or laparoscopy..
