Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy is an invasive diagnostic medical technique, with the help of an instrument called a laparoscope, which allows control of the inside of the abdomen. It uses a camera and light attached to a thin-diameter pencil-like telescope called a laparoscope. The laparoscope is inserted into the pelvic cavity through a very small incision just below the navel.

The main uses of laparoscopy in gynaecology include:

• Diagnostic laparoscopy for pelvic pain or infertility investigation.
• Surgery to repair, remove, or occlude the fallopian tubes.
• Diagnosis and treatment of ectopic pregnancy.
• Diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis.
• Removal of ovarian cysts.
• Removal of fibroids.
• Total or subtotal laparoscopic hysterectomy, with or without removal of the ovaries and fallopian tubes.
• Laparoscopic suspension of the uterus or vaginal vault to the sacrospinous ligament for pelvic-organ prolapse.
• Laparoscopic pelvic lymph-node dissection for selected gynaecological cancers.
